CHAPTER 9

The journey from Drima Falls High to the street off Gregory and Elms where Elder Sabrina lived was short, and we dropped Linda’s car off along the way. I pulled into her driveway as a gust of wind sent leaves tumbling across the yard. I rushed out of the car as soon as I turned off the engine and ran to the front door, stopping at the entrance. It was already open, and I doubted she would appreciate my barging into her house without knocking.

“Come in, Breena,” a voice called as I caught my breath. Linda and Sinn now stood by my side. Together, we entered the pastel-painted room and saw Elder Sabrina once again. She sat on the floral sofa with a cup in her hand. She had the same tea cup with green liquid and I wondered if it was the only thing she loved to drink. The free-flowing white gown she wore made her seem heavenly and peaceful.

“We found the remaining two ingredients,” I said. The excitement in my voice was noticeable and Elder Sabrina smiled.

“I thought you would fail. But it seems there is a force of good working on your behalf. I mean, one who is interested in your success,” she said as I smiled. I agreed there must be someone rooting for me, because the events of the last twenty-four hours required a truckload of luck and I sailed through.

“Where is it?” She asked, and I raised the Elderberries still in the sack while Linda handed her the fibula bone of the bald eagle. There was an excited glint in Elder Sabrina’s eyes and I knew immediately that she had been looking for these ingredients for a long time.

“Let’s go,” she ordered. She stood, turning towards her television set, and pressed a button on the wall. Immediately, a secret door slid open, and she disappeared through it, taking the steps that appeared as she descended. I paused for a moment and I turned to see Linda and Sinn looking at me.

“Let me lead the way,” Sinn said, and he moved ahead of me, walking through the door before I could respond. His actions made me safe, and I followed him through the door with Linda behind me. As soon as she entered, the door closed sharply, leaving us in a poorly lit corridor with a staircase that led downward. The candles in the wrought iron wall sconces flared as we took the first step.

Slowly, we descended, taking each stair one at a time until we reached the last which ushered us into a spacious room filled with ancient artifacts. The left side of the room was lined with shelves. It looked like an inventory of potions and rare items to make more. Linda grabbed my hand, squeezing tightly, and I understood her fear. Being in a place like this was terrifying even for a witch. In the center of the room stood Elder Sabrina. She was no longer wearing the free-flowing white gown from earlier.
